WW I 1 AMERICAN PROPAGANDA PICTURE PHOTO XL The2FunAdGuyz offer a new high-quality reproduction print of a World War I, civilian publicity news photo designed to encourage American women to knit vital clothing for members of the Army, Navy, and Marines in military service. This publicity picture of a wealthy man and wife, residents of (Palm Beach, Florida) knitting was part of a campaign waged by the Red Cross to knit items for military personnel. The photo features a well-dressed man, identified on the photo as J. Leon Phillips, and his equally fashionable wife, shown knitting for the war effort. Everyone pitched in and did his or her part. Most Americans at the time probably did not wear spats, suit and tie or boutonniere to help their wife knit in the park. However, “society people” of the era really did their part and this type of photograph delivered a compelling message at a time when most Americans had a husband, brother, father or friend serving in the war. HOME DECOR IDEAS: Utilize this warm photo in the Home Decor of a den, library, and game room, bar, pub, sewing or crafts room. HISTORICAL PERSPECTIVE: These photos encouraging women to knit sox, scarves, sweaters, and other military clothing were of considerable strategic importance—particularly in the trenches of the European battlefields. The Red Cross furnished yarn and patterns—the women (and many men) furnished the labor. Because the textile mills converted to produce uniforms, the production of smaller clothing items stopped. At that point, the American Red Cross and its members went to work. Across the country, women made knitting and sewing needles the new tools of war. Because of poorly manufactured boots and the cold weather in the trenches, soldiers needed to wear two pair of socks at a time in order to prevent frostbite. Mittens with no trigger fingers, scarves, helmet covers, and Navy caps were just a few of the items knitted by the thousands. Sadly, garments needed to cover the wounds caused by amputation of limbs became essential. CAPTION: Mr. J. Leon Phillips, Palm Beach, Florida, holding yarn for his wife as she knits for war effort.
