PUBLIC HEALTH ART DECO POSTER STAMP OUT SYPHILIS Up for sale is a new print of an art deco style WPA Public Health Poster used in a campaign to build awareness about the twin scourges of syphilis and gonorrhea. Efforts to educate the public about the problems of venereal diseases such as syphilis and gonorrhea have created tremendous debate as to whether the issue is a moral or public health issue. After World War I, the nation found that many of the returning soldiers had contracted syphilis and many of them did not know it. Many young wives contracted the disease on their wedding night since blood tests were not required for marriage licenses. Because there were tremendous social implications, the campaign to get people tested was important and this poster was one of those attempts. Ironically, syphilis is once again becoming a major health problem. A man is pictured with his finger pointed at the reader. The copy reads: Stamp out syphilis and Gonorrhea. Have you had your blood test and examination? Go to your Dept. of Health. Bureau of Social Hygiene, 51 Stuyvesant Place, S.I. An unknown artist did the poster sometime between 1936 and 1938. This is a great addition to any WPA poster collection or collection of public health awareness campaigns. This print is on a quality 100# high glossy text paper. The photo measures 10.5 inches (w) X 13.5 inches (h). It has a small border to allow for framing.
