MAGIC POSTER THURSTON MAGICIAN BALAAM & DONKEYUp for sale is a new print of a 1914 magic poster for Thurston The Great, among the greatest magicians of all time. As was common with magical posters of the time, this poster shows the stages of a trick in a few steps. Thurston is pictured on the left side of the poster, the largest figure on the poster. Above his left arm is stage one of the trick, An empty cabinet or some sort of box. In the next figure, a donkey, boy and girl are shown inside the box with two red devil/demons about to close the curtains. Finally, the two devil/demons pull away the curtains to reveal the box once again empty. Finally, the donkey is shown being pulled up a staircase by a woman while a man pushes from behind. The clothes and decorations have a markedly Egyptian flavor—a favorite theme for magicians throughout time. The headline reads: “Thurston The Great Magician, The Wonder Show of the Universe.†The caption reads: “Balaam and His Donkey. A Boy, Donkey and His Girl Appear and Vanish Several Times in Different Parts of the Theatre.†Balaam was a Biblical character noted for his curses. While riding his donkey to curse the Israelites, Balaam beats and nearly kills the donkey. God gives the donkey the power of speech to berate Balaam for his treatment. As a result, Balaam doesn’t curse the Israelites but gives them a blessing. Biblical and other ancient texts were integrated into many magical acts. Thurston, like many other magicians of the day, was a member of the Masonic Order. Thurston had a complex and large show that needed ten railway cars to contain everything he utilized in his show. This new print is on a high-quality 100# glossy text paper. The actual image measures 10.5†(w) X 14.5†(h). The paper is 11†(w) x 17†(h). Therefore, it has a small border to allow for framing.
