LEMP BREWING LAGER BEER POSTER NEWSBOYS DRINKINGThe2FunAdGuyz offer a new print of a late 1800s Lager Beer poster for the Wm. J. Lemp Brewing Co., St Louis, U.S.A. A group of newsboys, or "Newsies" as they were commonly called, is shown drinking a case of Wm. J. Lemp Brewing Co., Lager Beer. The five boys have already consumed part of the case as evidenced by the empty bottles strewn about. This remarkable illustration was probably done in the late 1800s as a Christmas poster ad for bars and retail outlets. While by today's standards it seems preposterous to depict children consuming alcohol, the poster does point out yet another side effect of child labor. ARTIST: The artist of this piece is unknown. HISTORICAL PERSPECTIVE: The William J. Lemp Brewing Co. was based in St. Louis, Missouri. Adam Lemp, a German immigrant, established the first brewery in St. Louis. Upon Adam Lemp's death his son, William J. Lemp, changed the company name to the Wm. J. Lemp Brewing Co. The Lemp Co remained the largest independent brewery in St. Louis until the early 1900s. With the arrival of prohibition, the company was severely crippled financially and was eventually closed.
