What a tremendous item! This is a new print of an ointment label that stands as one of the most successful patent medicines of all time. Holloway’s Ointment and Pills were created and promoted ( and we do mean promoted) by Thomas Holloway (1800-1883). Holloway was British and he developed pills and an ointment. He used a variety of promotional techniques for the products including one in which he went to the English seaports and promoted to sailors, who then began spreading the product around the world. Holloway became wealthy and a philanthropist. One of his most famous contributions was the astounding and ornate Royal Holloway College, which is part of the University of London. This particular print is based on the American version of the medicines. The headline reads: Soldier's True Friend, Holloway's Ointment & pills. This label was issued during the Civil War and shows two soldiers in an unknown conflict, one man treating another man's wound. There are roundels containing text on each side of the illustration. One reads: Volunteers, Attention! Health for All. Always Ready. The other side reads: Mark These Facts! The Testimony of the whole world. The caption below the label reads: Sold at the Manufactory of Professor Holloway, 80 Maiden Lane, New York, and by all respectable Druggists and dealers throughout the civilized world; in boxes at 25 cents, 62 cents and $1 each. Holloway issued a variety of promotional tokens with his medicines. His advertisements are legendary including one in Punch magazine that boasted: Mr. Holloway declares that his famous ointment will mend the legs of men and tables equally well and is an excellent relish for frying fish in. What collector of advertising memorabilia or patent medicine labels would not want to have this print in their collection? George Schlegel Lithography, New York City did the original lithograph on which this print is based. This print is on a quality 100# high glossy text paper. The poster measures 10.5†(w) X 10.5 (h). It has a small border to allow for framing. This is perfect for a standard 16†x 20†frame, a manageable size for a variety of decorating purposes. The condition of this item is new.
