HISTORICAL PERSPECTIVE: During the late 1800s and early 1900s, magicians like Howard Thurston, Harry Kellar and Harry Houdini perfected the magic stage show. Arguably, the greatest of these was Harry Houdini. Houdini (1874-1926) was born in Hungary, the son of a Rabbi who eventually moved the family to the United States. Erich Weiss was his real name. He changed it to Houdini to honor the French magician, Jean Eugene Robert-Houdin, who had owned a French Magic Theater. Houdini married a fellow performer, Beatrice Rahner and they performed together. Houdini specialized in card and escapist tricks and this poster helped to establish his reputation. Houdini died on October 31, 1926 from complications from a ruptured appendix. While Houdini used many standard magical tricks and techniques, he also was an accomplished locksmith and had a keen knowledge of their inner workings. Houdini promoted an offer to pay one hundred dollars to any person who could successfully shackle him. Not once did he ever have to pay.
